Individual E-Journal
My
name is Lionel Ng Voon Yoong, I am currently taking diploma in business as my
course in Taylors University. This E-Journal will be reflecting on one of my
subjects of my course which is the community service initiative. In this
subject, Miss Sarah Abedi Abdullah is my respective lecturer where as Miss
Joyce Cheah Kim Sim is my respective tutor. I have gain a lot of new experience
and knowledge upon taking up this subject. I have got the chance to know and
interact with the respective somolian students who came all the way to Malaysia
from their country with the help of the Fugee school.
First
of all, I was lucky enough to have the privilege of getting to know more and
also spend some quality time with the somalian student. Based on what they have
shared to us, they all came to Malaysia as a refugee in the first place. A
refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of war
or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of
race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular
social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so.
Every year, the numbers of refugees keep on increasing and they tend to leave
their country to another in a search for a better living environment.
Other
than that, we were given a period of time to interact and also to teach the
somolian students something that they never learnt. Within these 10 weeks which
I have spent with the somolian students, I have guided and teach them on
completing their given course which is the “A Beginner’s Guide to Preparing Financial
Statements”. There were three main topics in this course which is the introduction
to accounting terms, how to prepare an income statement and how to prepare and
go through a statement of financial position. I believe upon completing the videos
and activities, it will be very helpful to the somolian students when they are
ready to be out at the society and work. Moreover, I even got the chance to fetch the somolian students at their living place to campus and also to observe
how their everyday lives are. The following photo shows my mentee, Sabrin and I
as her mentor with another partner mentor.
Furthermore,
I’ve also participated in the forming of committees of the class, serving as
one of the committee members for the food and beverages department. Our
department’s task is to prepare food and beverages on every Wednesday to for
the respective somolian students, committee members as well as for our
respective lecturers. On every Wednesday afternoon, we would stand in front of
the DIB café to distribute food and drinks to our fellow somolian students. Seeing
the happiness on the somolian students faces after receiving their food and
drinks really does teach us how to appreciate the things that we already have
in life. Even it’s just a sandwich and a drink, the appreciation shown by the
somolian students is indescribable. I feel that not only they have learnt
something from us, but myself have also learnt something valuable from them.
Last
but not least, I feel that I have receive much knowledge after getting the
chance to be with the somolian students. I have learnt to appreciate the things
that I already have in life and also to help the ones that are desperately in
need in our community. These experiences with the somolian students will be
extremely valuable to me and I will take the initiative to let even more people
to know more about them and the Fugee School. I really do think that this is a
very successful module as it has helped me to widen my horizons and I really
hope that Taylors University would continue to organize modules and activities
like these for their students.
